Anguilla Summer festival

Anguilla Summer festival: July 28th – August 7th 2016

Anguilla Summer Festival is a combination of Carnival and boat racing activities. This year will celebrate forty six years of carnival. Summer Festival on Anguilla began as an emancipation celebration, which included traditional August Monday fairs, Bazaars and the old time Christmas festivities, which features many African influenced cultural expressions of island life.

Today’s Carnival is eleven days of celebration incorporated with Anguillan cultural flare and hospitality to include the grand parade of troupes, J’ouvert, beauty pageants, and calypso competitions.

Anguilla Summer Festival focuses on August Monday, which is the first Monday in August. August Monday officially began to be celebrated in 1940 with boat racing. Unlike most of the former British colonial Caribbean islands, where cricket is the national sport, boat racing has outdone cricket as the favorite national pastime for Anguillans. Boat racing is a tradition that dated back many generations, which began as a means of economic survival. Today, boat racing has become a trademark for Anguillian culture and tourism.
